| Information About Ecuador |

|
Ecuador lies at the north-eastern part of South America, over the equator line which divides the two hemispheres. The Andes mountain chain, the water currents and the Amazon produce significant variations in weather. Ecuador has four different regions: the Pacific coast is always warm and dry, the south is tropical, and the north is humid. In the Andes there are warm lands which can be both moderate and cold. In the Amazon region on the other hand, the temperatures are high, with high levels of rain. And the famous Galapagos Islands, studied by Darwin, offer an enjoyable subtropical climate. The total extension of the country is 256.370 km2.

Quito (2850m above sea level), is located next to the Pichincha Volcano (4794m.a.s.l), and was declared by UNESCO a Cultural World Heritage centre. It is one of the most important historic cities in the Americas. With noticeable renaissance beauty and classic baroque architecture, it displays its churches and convents built in the colonial period. The Metropolitan Cathedral, in front of Plaza de La Independencia, is one of the buildings of greater magnitude, as is San Francisco, La Compañia de Jesus, San Agustín, Santo Domingo, El Sagrario, La Merced, Carmen Bajo, San Sebastián and Santa Bárbara o San Blas. The majority of their interiors are decorated with gold and preserve countless pieces of religious art. The museums exhibit valuable collections of paintings and sculptures belonging to the "Escuela Quiteña" (Quito School).
Another building of importance is Carondelet Palace, the Government house. The old city of narrow, cobbled stones shows the Spanish influence, and through the house's façade are balconies, maroon balconies, thick columns and central patios.

There are many restaurants of national and international repute, shopping centres, theatres and convention centres. The city was founded on the 6th of December 1534 by Sebastian de Benalcazar. Ever since this time, during the month of December, the city celebrates with bull runs, the election of the Queen of the City, music concerts with national and international artists, popular dances, fire works and much more. |
